Do You Own Lavere Redfield’s Silver Dollars?

Lavere Redfield was a farmer who passed away in 1974. After investing in stocks, deemed worthless by so-called savvy investors, Redfield began to dabble in other acquisitions. Variously known as an eccentric and a shrewd financier, some of the humble farmer’s assets later became quite valuable.

Redfield moved to Nevada after the Great Depression where he settled in Reno. It was here, in the center of silver territory, that Redfield began amassing his silver dollars. Periodically purchasing $1,000 bags of silver dollars from banks, Redfield was able to acquire the largest hoard of silver coins known to have ever been stored in one location.

Redfield didn’t squander his wealth, although he was robbed frequently while carrying his coins home in the bed of his truck. His remaining silver stores rested, untouched in his basement until his death. As Lavere Redfield’s estate was settled, 400,000 silver coins were brought up from his makeshift vault.

Composed of Morgan and Peace design silver dollars, his coin cache became known as “The Redfield Hoard.” Dispersed worldwide by auction in 1976, silver dollars purchased today may have once been owned by Lavere Redfield.
