Jersey Island Archaeological Site Yields $15 Million in Silver Coins

The island of Jersey, located off the coast of England, is the site of a recently discovered archaeological cache. The island is where Richard Miles and Reg Mead, two amateur metal detector enthusiasts, discovered $15 million worth of ancient silver coins.

The pair had been searching for the riches for over thirty years after rumors swirled about a farmer finding silver coins on his own land in eastern Jersey. The hoard, weighing approximately three-quarters of a ton is estimated to contain about fifty-thousand coins, each worth $150 to $300. The coins date back to the first century B.C., and are of Celtic and Roman origin.

Deputy Environmental Minister, Rob Duhamel says that the exact location where the hoard was found will not be disclosed. Secrecy prevents destruction of valuable sites by untrained speculators, hoping to cash in.

Jersey has not offered up an archaeological coin find of this magnitude in more than a half century.
